The End of Jamboree Pictures

Parent and Scouts:

These are the last of the pictures. Note that your boys can upload their best shots to these same galleries of pictures for us all to enjoy.   Also, should your scouts be interested, they can take any of these pictures and/or others they captured and create shrot 3-4 minute vignettes that tell a story from the camp/tour and they can share them with us at the reunion or online in these Flickr galleries.  That would fulfill merit badge requirements for Communications and Cinematography.

In any case have the boys describe the various stories behind these pictures as a way of sharing this experience with your families.

Enjoy!

Williamsburg an Bush Gardens

Well I need to appologize once again for the delay in posting to the blog. The jamboree was a whirlwind of fun and activities. But they say that a picture is worth a thousand words. So here are some pictures of the last leg of our journey.

We have gotten so many great photos here at the jamboree that it is taking multiple albums to get all of the pictures together. Here are the first two.

From the Summit

Sorry for the delay in getting information out about what we have been up to out here.

We have been running around exploring the summit having a grand old time that before we know it, it is time to get some shut eye.

So here is a run down of the past few days.

Monday we arrived at the check in location around two o'clock and made it to our camp site by three thirty,  and started setting up the camp. Honestly that was way faster than we thought it would be. Other than it being the hottest day since we started this grand adventure it was a good day.

Tuesday was the kick off of the jamboree and we started the day off with a show in the arena.  After that we sent the boys out to explore the jamboree.  The funny part of that was the boys have grown so accustomed to being with and follow the leaders they hesitated to take off by themselves (in buddies) when we told them to go have fun.  The day ended with all of the boys making it back to camp at the designated time safe and sound.

Wednesday we participated in the day of service. Getting there was a grand adventure it self never a good sign when you are given barf bags for the trip.  The directions given to the bus driver were either incomplete or incorrect because it took us an hour and two U turns to get to our destination that was only 20 minutes away. When we finally arrived at our drop off site we found out that we would be cutting a new hiking and biking trail. The boys worked hard and did a great job.

Day five, six, and seven

So we spent three days in Washington DC, and I'm glad that we did. There is so much to see and do in the District that you would be hard pressed to realize the full scope of the city and its monuments, history, and architecture if you tried to whirlwind it in one day.

So the first day we went to Mount Vernon, the home of Goerge Washington. We walked around the grounds and saw the slaves quarters, the blacksmits shop, along with the mansion. Some of us also went and visited Washingtons tomb.We returned to Washington DC and took a tour of the capital building, where they take you through the cript, the rotunda, and the statue room. We finished the afternoon by visiting the Smithonian museums. Most of the boys enjoyed the air and space museum. That evening we went to the Marine Corps barracks at 8th and I to watch the silent drill team.

On day two we had a guided tour of the monuments around Washington DC. We started at the Boy Scout memorial, that marks the site of the National jamboree that was held in Washington DC. After that we saw the Washington memorial from a distance, but were not able to go inside as it is under construction at this time.We then headed over to the WWII, Korea, and Vietnam memorials. The Lincoln, and Martin Luther King memorials to finish up the morning. For the afternoon we visited the national archives where te boys were able to see the founding documents of our country. We finished the day early and the boys were able to hit the pool at the hotel and relax for a while.

As many of you know our fearless Scout Master Wayne Donaldson had to leave us early to take care of some time sensitive urgent family business.  Wayne is missed By us all and his call off number is still sounded off every day.  Wayne still remains in contact with the scout master's on a daily basis and is supporting the boys effort from home as much as he can.

Day three was Sunday, and we started the day with a nondenominational service at Arlington cemetery. After the services we walked around Arlington cemetery, and visited the tomb of the unknown soldier to watch the changing of the guard.

As we were leaving Arlington cemetery we drove around the Iwo Jima memorial.  We then walked by the White House, and went to lunch.

After lunch we went to the Washington DC LDS temple visitors center and the boy(s) put together a sacrament service.

We ended the day with a trip to Baltimore to eat dinner at Mideval times.

Tomorrow we are of to West Virginia and the Summit.

Day four

Today we are off to spend the day at Gettysburg.

Today we went to the visitors center and watched the film "A New Birth of Freedom", after witch we went to visited the the massive, 360-degree Cyclorama, "Battle of Gettysburg"

After lunch we had a step on guide join us and show us around the battlefield, and share some insight into the battle with the boy's.

When we were finished with our tour we had some spare time until we had to head to dinner so we took the boy's into the town of Gettysburg and let them explore the shops until it was time to leave.

Then it was off to Washington DC for the weekend.

One of the boys asked Wayne "Its Wednesday right?"

Day three

Philadelphia the city of brotherly love. Another fun filled day.

The boys were still tired from the long day in New York that I am not sure if they are going to remember anything that we saw in Philadelphia.  We stayed in the historic district around liberty hall. Visiting the court house, Benjamin Franklin's house, and a recreation of his print shop. The National Park Service demonstrated how an old time print press worked.

After the print press went into Liberty Hall. As the park ranger described it "the most important room in the most important building in the most important square mile in America".

As I stood in Liberty Hall and though about the inspired work that was done, I was overcome with the felling that there was truly direct guidance from our father in heaven.

We then went to see the Liberty bell. After which we headed to Valley Forge where we had lunch and celebrated Thomas Vandenberghe's birthday.

We ended the day with a home style Amish dinner at plain and fancy restaurant in Lancaster, PA (best meal of the trip).

Ryder Sloan says "This is the funnest week ever".

Keegan Smith says "Sleep is important when you have a full schedule".

Austin Bangetersays "I'm not dead yet".

Day two

What a day.

Day two started with a harbor tour around the statue of liberty, Ellis Island, and some of the iconic Brooklyn bridge. Ending in Battery park.

After the harbor tour we went to the USS Intrepid museum.  Where we learned that the intrepid was one of the few naval ships to see combat in three wars (WW2, Korea, and Vietnam). We were also able to walk through the USS Growler. A balistic nuclear submarine.

After exploring the ships we walked to times square, Rockefeller Center, and St Patricks cathedral.

After finding a lost scout and returning him to his troop, we went to the 9-11 memorial.

After leaving the 9-11 memorial we walked down to wall street and the boys spotted the guys from impractical jokers. I am mot sure who enjoyed the encounter more, the boys or the guys from impractical jokers. All of the boys got autographs, and the impractical jokers looked like they were enjoying the attention from the boys.

We ended the day with with ice cream and a devotional.

Off to Philadelphia tomorrow.
